A phone call (there is an answer phone) or written explanation of why the child is absent is necessary.

ACCIDENTS
At Waianiwa School every effort is made to avoid accidents through close supervision at all times.

However, in the event of an accident, we will do our best to contact you, the parents, while taking any emergency action necessary for the child. Wherever possible, you will be consulted before any medical action is taken.

You can help in this regard by ensuring that we always have up to date telephone numbers for both parents and an emergency contact person. Please keep us informed when changes occur.

BICYCLES
Bike stands are provided.  All pupils biking to school are expected to know and obey road rules.  The wearing of helmets is compulsory.

BOOK CLUB
The school subscribes to Scholastic NZ Book Club. Opportunity is given up to three times a term for your child to order books through the school.

BUSES
The School buses are operated by McDermott’s. Pupils are expected to sit quietly to ensure the safety of all.  Misconduct which impinges on children’s safety will be given a warning and parents notified.  If misconduct re-occurs in the same term the child will not have bus transport for the week.  The bus controller (Principal) maintains close liaison with bus contractor and parents.  Waianiwa School’s procedures for Bus Transport has further details.

CALENDAR
A term calendar of known coming events is sent home at the beginning of each term.  It is a guide for you so that you can plan ahead.  We welcome your involvement.

CAMP
The Year 5-6 pupils go on a camp every second year (even years). At present they go to Camp Columba near Gore. The tenure of the camp is about three days.

CLOTHING
Please ensure that your children’s clothing is clearly named.  It is a great help in finding the owner.

CONCERNS
There will be times when you will have a concern about aspects of your child’s education.  It is vital that you direct your concerns to the school.

DENTAL CLINIC
Please contact Southern Health Office if your child requires urgent treatment.
Phone 2145773.

DISCIPLINE
Positive behaviour is recognized and acknowledged along with negative behaviour.  Rewards, certificate rewards, and Hero of the Week reinforce the positive.  Blue cards are issued when School Rules are broken.  3 blue cards issued within a 5 week period deprives a child of a half term “Friday Fuzzy” and Parents/Caregivers are contacted.

DUTY
A designated teacher is always on duty during interval and lunchtime.  The duty teacher supervises children after school who do not travel on buses.  This ensures they are safely picked up from the school gate or released to bike/walk home.  These children wait on the tennis court after the bell and are released with the duty teacher’s supervision.

EMERGENCY DRILL
Emergency procedures are practiced each term followed a long continuous bell.  All children and adults who are at school at this time, are expected to assemble on the open grass field, north of the library block.

ENROLMENTS
Please phone the school office or leave a message (03) 2352 858 to arrange a time to make an enrolment.  Pre-school visits are encouraged especially for New Entrants and we are very happy to show new families, our school.

The school accepts new entrants upon the child reaching their fifth birthday.  A legal requirement is that a copy of the birth certificate and immunisation certificate is sighted by the school.

FAX/EMAIL/SCANNER/BINDER/PHOTOCOPIER/LAMINATOR
The school fax number is the same as the phone 2352 858.  You are welcome to communicate with the school in this manner if you wish.  Children are taught its use as a communication tool.
The email address is: principal@waianiwa.school.nz.
Scanner, binder, photocopier and laminator services are available at a small cost.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
A fire alarm system is installed at the school. The Board has agreed a $100 fine is to be charged for any child purposefully setting off the system.

FOOTWEAR
As classrooms have been carpeted the Board has decided upon children removing their footwear whilst in class. Children are able to bring alternative footwear to wear at this time.

Once again up to date information is important.
Where any medical conditions which are relevant to the child's welfare and comfort at school exist, please pass on such information to the teacher(s) concerned.
Any medication to be taken refer to policy.
It is expected that no child will be sent to school while suffering from contagious diseases, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, etc.

LOST PROPERTY
This is held by the art room in the foyer. A named belonging is a great help in finding the owner quickly. At the end of each term the lost property that has not been claimed will be given to a charity group.

LUNCHES
The school operates a pie warmer so that lunches brought from home can be heated. Please wrap in tin foil and have these named. We discourage food that needs boiling water added as it is a hazard to young students.

MEDICATION
This must be given to a teacher and an “Administering Medication” form be completed by parents prior to it being given by staff.

NEWSLETTERS
Newsletters are sent home with the children each Monday. It is policy to send one newsletter to each family and this is carried by the oldest member who is a pupil.  A signed return slip is brought back to school to acknowledge its receipt.  All slips go in an office box.  Term draws are made and a treat given.

PAPER AND SCHOOL DONATION
A paper donation is asked of each pupil. This is voluntary and used to supplement our paper costs for the photocopier.
The pupil donation for each child is voluntary and is used for any educational visits, sporting exchanges and any visiting educational performers which complement our programmes

STATIONERY
The school operates its own stationery outlet and parents have the option of purchasing at this source.
At the beginning of each year the children are given stationery order sheets.
A monthly account will be sent for children’s incidental stationery purchases.

SWIMMING
Instruction in swimming skills is taught in Physical Education for part of Terms 1 and 4 in our heated, covered swimming pool. All children are to participate. Your own personal baths key can be purchased from the school for $60 a year, with a $5 refund when your key is returned.

TOYS
Unless students are asked to bring them, toys are better left at home. This prevents toys being broken and students out-doing one another. Play equipment is provided at school.

UNIFORMS
The PTA has donated a school set of Polo Tops and a team set of Vests for use when pupils are representing their school in sport, curriculum or cultural activities.  Orders are taken for pupils’ sweatshirts or sweatpants.  Second hand sweatshirts are sometimes available from the school office.
All pupils are issued with sunhats and safety vests.

VALUES CURRICULUM
Our school is the first rural school in New Zealand to be accredited the Cornerstone Values logo for Character Education. The school prides itself on the curriculum developed for teaching life’s “Values”.  A weekly half hour programme is delivered.  It focuses on a new theme each term, the values being Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, Compassion, Concern and Consideration, Kindness, Duty Obedience.  A two-year plan has been developed and we are very happy to show this to you. We believe the approach has had a very positive impact on our school.

VESTS
Each student is supplied with a hi-visibility safety vest. This must be worn to and from school and will be worn whenever we go off site.

VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors need to sign in the visitors’ book at the office. This is necessary for emergency procedures.

WINDOWS
Occasionally children break windows/damage property. Usually this is accidental and the school can stand the cost. When the damage is vandalism, intentional or the result of children’s disobedience we may expect parents to pay part of the cost. This is the norm in other schools as well.

If you have any other questions or matters to discuss – do not hesitate to contact us.
